Hampshire Top Awards’ first Young Leaders Rally took place during the last weekend of January 2018. The Explorers were split into two halves with around 50 participants completing their Young Leader’s Training, which enabled them to learn the skills to help the younger sections and gain their young leader’s belt. Meanwhile, the other rally participants took part in activities, which included bushcraft, climbing and shooting as well as workshops on topics such as challenging behaviour, facilitated by experts in each area.
On the Friday evening, some of the Young Leaders began their training by playing games as well as discussing the different types of games and how to run them. This was then followed by a group activity which involved discussing different leadership styles and their effectiveness. The workshop participants enjoyed some challenging activities such as an egg drop challenge from the balcony of Lyon’s Lodge.
We were joined by the County Commissioner, Martin Mackey, for breakfast on Saturday, who enjoyed so he could meeting the Young Leaders and viewing the planned activities. The Young Leader training continued with completion of some more of the modules (making scouting accessible and finishing off the games module). Meanwhile, the other Young Leaders took part in workshops on programme planning and enjoyed climbing and bushcraft sessions.
After lunch, the activities continued with shooting and a further workshop on how to deal with challenging behaviour which many of the participants enjoyed. The training participants were also learning about dealing with behaviour in a fun activity where the helpers started misbehaving and the training leader began shouting at them. Something he does not do regularly! By the time the Young Leaders had worked out what was going the leader had nearly sent the helpers home!
After dinner, we headed towards the campfire to enjoy some traditional campfire singing and everyone learnt at least one new song. Johnny English Reborn was the chosen film watched by some of the attendees. The other Young Leaders played some games to finish off the day before having supper and going to bed.
On Sunday we held the first Young Leaders forum which was the conference part of the weekend. It involved 6 bases ran by the different leaders covering different aspects of scouting. This ranged from a talk about Explorers and Network to a presentation on the Top Awards to a discussion on the support available for Young Leaders.
After we had finished the forum we handed out the certificates and showed the video of the weekend (available on Youtube here). Those who wanted to do Module K training (First Aid) completed most of it throughout the course of the afternoon and then finished it off at home through our e-learning course.
Thank you to everyone who either participated or helped during the weekend and we hope to see you all again at next year’s Rally.
